Patch Dress Traveler #2 and Thoughts on Another Show

Patch Dress Traveler #2
mixed media on 12 x 16" stretched canvas
When I sketched out the idea for this Patch Dress painting, this is exactly what I had in mind and that usually does not happen.  The outcome of the paintings are usually very different from the original idea because I often run into trouble due to my lack of drawing skill (and painting skill for that matter).  I had the most trouble with the grass and the chickens in this one.  Thank you You Tube!  Or should I say thank you to the artists that make How To videos on You Tube!  I often watch a bunch of them and then sort of just wing it from there.

I am not sure how many paintings for this series I will do, but  I have a total of four canvases this size, so maybe I will call that good.  I have exactly two more ideas sketched out.  We will see.

Series paintings are challenging for me, I really just prefer to pick up a brush and go without a lot of planning.  There is reason though for doing this again.  Last October when I did the art show with my brother in-law, I met a really nice lady who is the art director at our local community art center called City Arts.  She asked me if I would be interested in doing a show and of course I said yes.  The show will be in Spring of 2014 which is long ways off, but I really want to get more comfortable with painting common themes.  The Patch Dress paintings are my attempt at doing so.

For the show in 2014 I need to work larger (at least 16 x 20") and have that cohesiveness that the Eight in Payne's Gray series had, which will be very hard for me.  I wanted to quit the Payne's Gray paintings after number 4!  The last two nearly killed me. (Not really, but it was hard)!

Well off I go, but before I do here's a couple photos of the new art room with TWINKLE LIGHTS...minus the twinkle part.  They add so much ambiance to the room and it is now beginning to feel like my space.   My sister says I need a different chair...I think she is right.

  2. Lisa brilliant one! To read that you think that you do not know how to draw and do not know how to paint and you kind of wing it makes my heart twirl round and round and makes me want to dance to the twirling in my chest. If I could produce what you do with these sentiments (I do have them, except I have not found the courage to wing it very often and that is a huge difference) then I'd be happier than I can imagine. So thank you for these words in this post because maybe what I need to do in my own journey is WING IT. I absolutely am in love with your art...with your painting style...and your vision period. Gorgeous painting. *smiles* Norma, x

    1. I usually respond to comments via email, but your heartfelt comment here Norma warrants a response for all to read. The best advice I have been given by other artists is to "paint what you love" and "be comfortable with who you are". I have tried to do this without holding back and quite honestly that annoying voice that says "this is dumb" bugs me constantly. But I keep painting for the sheer JOY of it! I am so happy you are inspired to WING IT!! I think you will be pleased and surprised what you cant do when you just let go and cut loose and just MAKE! Thank you for your enormously uplifting comment Norma! Smiles back, high fives, blog hugs and Happy Painting!

  9. I love the color flow you have going on in this and the last painting. Having the bottom of the dress merge with the path pattern is clever. Love a bit of mystery and wonder if she is getting mail or sending it?

  12. Is Patch Dress Traveler #2 looking for a love letter in that mailbox? Beautiful piece! I love the way the house and her dress play against the pretty grass.

Isn't YouTube a handy site? There are so many art videos. I could sit and watch them all day but of course I don't have time for that.

Your studio lights look great! Very nice Lisa!

Let me ask you, in your eyes, do you like The Homemaker or The Dancing Bedroom?? I know they are completely different, just wondering what you thought ;o) Hugs ;o)
