122 Spring St.
acrylic on 9 x 12" 140 lb watercolor paper
I thought I would give the fracturing technique (see the last post) another try using acrylic this time. It didn't work at all. I think it was a combination of the acrylics drying too fast and the fact that I was working on paper which absorbs the paint rather quickly.
This painting was done with a photo of a street in SoHo in New York City when my husband and I were there a couple of summers ago. I truly ♥NY. There is SO much to do and see there. We have oodles of photos from our trip that could easily become paintings which was my intention all along.
This is my second attempt at painting a scene from those photos. The first attempt is a night scene in Upper West Manhattan...an unfinished 16 x 20 acrylic painting that I started over a year ago and never finished. The details overwhelmed me. However after painting this, maybe I will find the courage to try to finish it soon.
Photo used as reference
The flag in the picture says John Varvatos. So I looked up John Varvatos on the internet and now I know he's a high fashion designer and this is his store location in SoHo. Thus the title 122 Spring St. ... "because that's how I roll" (as our youngest - the newlywed son would put it). :)
Happy Valentines Day!
(and Happy Birthday to our son...he's 22 today)! |
Not a failure!!! I love the energy of this piece and the title is cool, too. Happy Bday to your son and Happy Valentine's to you my friend!
ReplyDeleteJust love your interpretation of the picture you took, Lisa.

wow, i love this painting - i love what you decided to keep. you're so good at that! i'd try to paint every damn detail!! and of course the colors... love the colors you chose...
ReplyDeletehappy valentine's day lisa!!
xoxo
I'd not heard of the fracturing, and I think it's pretty interesting. I don't think it's a failure, I think it still has a lot of mood to it, and that's a success! I loved visiting NYC too!
ReplyDeleteI think this is beautiful Lisa. Great job on the buildings!
ReplyDeleteIf it's a failure I'm not sure why! I think it looks great.
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentine's Day and Happy Birthday to your son!!! I think your painting is stunning!! No failure!!! Big Hugs ;o)
ReplyDeleteHey Lisa, under, your more paintings section, you have a girl in a black dress, with wild hair. Can you tell me about it?
ReplyDeleteIts that a failure, show you me your sucesses because I love this one, you captured it beautifuly
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else Lisa. This is a special painting. I love it.
ReplyDeleteIf you had not fractured it the quality of the paint would have been different, but you would have still ended up with the imagery you wanted.
Gessoed canvas or paper would have been easier for you, BUT would the end result have this kind of variations in the colors I find so appealing here? The layering adds so much.
Art is such a wonderful journey.
wonderful! not normally a fan of street scenes, but this one hits the mark for me! :))
ReplyDeleteI love this painting, Lisa.! I love Cityscapes and SO happy you love New York...It's a hell of a town!!!
ReplyDeletethis is really a great painting!
ReplyDeleteWe went to New York last summer for the first time. I really loved SoHo as well. How cool that you got to do painting to remind you of a fun trip. Your painting looks great ..

Hey, you love to paint and it shows....failed experiment or not, you are a risk taker enjoying the ride :)
ReplyDeleteIt's so cool that you put up the reference photo. I love the painting and there is just enough fracturing in it to heighten interest. This reminds me a little of a Ben Shahn illustration. Do you know him?
ReplyDeleteI love it!
Looks good to me...There is a lot of detail there though and I see how your first piece was simpler. Keep at it, who knows what you might discover. xox
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa, i like the urban scene.. good job! Hugs
ReplyDeleteLove your urban styled paintings so much!! I would never thought it is a failed one...It looks so interesting and alive!! Love how you interpret your photo, so cool!! xox Conny
ReplyDeleteCiao Lisa,
Ciao, ciao, abbracci, Floriana
I too think the painting is lovely...works beautifully, and although the technique you were perhaps trying didn't work the same way it did in the technique video (which I still have to check out) I think it added to this beautiful painting. So like you say ... a happy result. Love it!
ReplyDeleteGosh Lisa, it hardly looks "failed" to me! I love it! I've never been to NYC. I'm sure I would love to visit someday, but right now I'm having too much fun discovering wonderful things about this city on the other side of the US! :-)
ReplyDeleteLOVE this painting. such an interesting reference choice. you may have struggled with the medium--but it doesn;t show in the artwork. well done.
