Paintings and a Little Something About Alice Neel

Bird on a Branch
5.5 x 6" oil on canvas paper

Well hello there.  How are you?  First off, thank you hugely for your great and very helpful comments on my last post.  After all your remarks my confidence to leave it as is went up 10,000 notches.  So THANK YOU!

Right now, I am head-down in my art room working and soaking in as much "art education" as time allows.  I'm in the "art zone".  Do you ever get that way...where you devour videos and books and the like in order to learn and be inspired?   I have been very busy painting...lots of works on paper so that I could play with some ideas in my head without the expense of wood or canvas.

I have used Julie Ford Oliver's fracturing technique some more.  All the oil paintings in this post were more attempts at her technique which seems to give some surprise results every time.  It is really fun to do. I still highly recommend the tutorial.  On her blog she has been sharing several other artists' works that are also trying her technique.  It is really fun to see all the different styles.

The two mixed media pieces below are in my own "whatever" style...no fracturing.   Again, the oils are attempts in "Julie Style".

No Waiting

Done from a  vacation photo of the fantastic pizzeria Grimaldi's in Brooklyn, NY....(but there is ALWAYS a wait)

This week this image caught my attention which led to watching the documentary on Alice Neel (1900-1984).   Alice was an unknown and troubled portrait artist who lived  in New York City most of her life...until...

Her life story will probably interest many of you so here's the trailer if you want to check it out.  The video is available on Netflix.

Have a great rest of the week!
