Grandpa Was a Beekeeper

Grandpa Was a Beekeeper
mixed media on canvas
20 x 20 inch
(sold)

I got stuck on this one for quite a while.  It actually sat long enough to collect dust.  When I finally started on it again, I lighted the walls dramatically and that was almost like a clean slate for me, sort of like resetting the stage.  I was then able to gently glaze in order to warm things up again.

Once the color was right, I began on all the small things. The details in the room took an entire day to paint.  It is one of those scenes where you could keep adding, but I felt ready to be finished and I think the painting did too.

The inspiration for this piece came from the wonderful and beautiful movie Mr. Holmes.  You can click here to see the movie trailer.  My story in this painting has bits and pieces from things I loved about the film.  I hope you enjoy both the painting and the movie if you haven't already seen it.

I hope everyone has a beautiful week.

  4. What an interesting painting. I love Sherlock Holmes dramas and films but for some reason on it's release it didn't appeal to me even though it stars the fantastic Ian McKellen. But you have ignited my interest. I will have to check it out.

  6. Glad that you finished this one. And so glad that you told about the inspiration for the piece. I feel like we sort of do the same thing, if I can so humbly say so!:) Gather in bits and pieces of information and images and turn it in to a kind of narrative. Just different results but the same idea.

    Have a good holiday, Lisa.

  10. This is so intriguing, Lisa.
Every part is so deliberate - as if special meanings exist. The bookcase is a treasure. is that a remote on the table? nah...but what is it?
And holding flashlight - in your house? nah! has to be a candle.

    1. Hi Julie! On the desk is a book that says "Bees" and a lamp and a pencil holder. The grandpa is holding a magnifying glass. I really need to brush up my drawing skill a bit! :)
