On the Way to Afternoon Tea

On the Way to Afternoon Tea
mixed media on cradled board 16 x 20 inch

The background and foreground took much longer than they should have.  I just could not get them right in my eyes.  I set it a side two days, came back to finish and realized it was finished after all.  Stepping away works every time.  Why can't I remember these simple things?

This painting was delivered to Tessera Fine Art Gallery today where it will hopefully find a home soon.

  3. Another wonderful painting, Lisa.
Interesting how you changed it slightly from the sketch. That happens to me all the time. Something about having paint on the canvas and going to the larger size. I like the addition of the jacket or sweater and short sleeves on the other lady. Wish you would let us know the story of the gate and fence - are they arriving?

    1. Thank you Julie. I often do change the painting quite a bit in comparison to the sketch. My sketches are often just quick thoughts jotted down, just the bare bones for the painting in a way. They certainly could be arriving just next door, couldn't they? I will let you decide. :)

    1. Thank you very much CrimsonLeaves. Vintage photos are often a source of inspiration for me, however I did not use a photo for this one.

  5. Oh I love this one. It has the same feeling as the other painting of yours that I love so much--the one you use for your FB link here.

    1. Hello Janet, and thank you for the nice comment. The painting in the Facebook link right now is Grandmother's Garden which was done last year. It was inspired by a vintage photo, however the lady in photo was older. She was standing in a garden and it looked like roses in the photo, but at the time I painted, I was not brave enough to paint roses, so I did coneflowers instead.

  6. This piece is just wonderful! You capture so much with such simplicity - not easy to achieve. I feel the setting, the friendship of the ladies, the sense of an adventure together -- all of that, while still leaving room for me to share my own story/memories. Brilliant!

    1. What a nice comment Judy. Thank you. I really love that it leaves room for imagination. That is important to me. I don't always want to tell the whole story. Thanks again.

  7. I love this work too...your stories are so important. I was very humored by the fact you had to step away from your painting for two days before you discovered it was indeed finished. That happened to me last week...except I had to step away for two years! Honest truth.

    1. Really? Two years?! I would probably forget I even started the painting altogether after two years. Ha ha!

Thank you for your nice comment Carol!

  8. I love watching how your painting opens...that's the only word I can think of to describe it.
The drawing of the two girls seems to have grown up into two grown women in the painting.
Stepping away is a good thing to be reminded of.

    1. Hi Patty! The figures did grow up into women. My small sketches are not very detailed, so they do come out young and cartooney. With painting, it's easier to add age.

I have been looking at the photos you sent quite a bit lately. I think of you every time.

Thanks for the visit and comment Patty!

    1. Thank you Hilda. I am so happy you noticed their dresses since I spent a lot of time on them. There are many layers of glaze. I had to keep trying until the hues were just right.

  10. such a sense of treasured moments with our friends. a history of what's important. I love how peaceful they are! and yes, why can't we remember the simple, the pause, the look away, just let it stew... oxox
